Why It Matters

Everything You Need to Know About
Travel Insurance in Canada

We compare travel insurance plans from top Canadian insurers and explain coverage clearly, so you can travel with confidence, not uncertainty.

Why Travel Insurance Matters

Provincial health coverage outside Canada is very limited. A single day in a US hospital can cost $10,000–$30,000. Travel insurance protects you from bills that could follow you home for years.

  • OHIP covers nothing outside Canada since January 2020. The program was eliminated
  • USA medical costs are among the highest in the world
  • Some visas require proof of travel insurance to be approved

As a Result, How EGE Insurance Helps

As a result, as a licensed brokerage, we compare plans from 15+ Canadian insurers side-by-side. We explain deductibles, exclusions, and pre-existing condition rules in plain language, with no surprises.

  • Clear comparison across top Canadian insurers
  • Plain-language guidance on what is and is not covered
  • Support from departure through to claims if you need it

Who Needs Travel Insurance

Travel insurance isn't just for long international trips. Any time you leave your home province, your provincial coverage may not apply fully, including travel within Canada.

  • Canadians travelling to the USA, Europe, or anywhere abroad
  • Travellers visiting destinations with Schengen visa requirements
  • Anyone doing outdoor, high-altitude, or adventure activities

Coverage Types

Emergency Medical Coverage vs. Non-Medical Coverage

Travel insurance is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding what each coverage type protects helps you build the right plan for your trip.

Non-Medical Coverage

Protects your financial investment in the trip itself. Covers losses that have nothing to do with your health, such as cancellations, delays, or lost luggage.

  • Trip Cancellation: if you cannot travel before departure
  • Trip Interruption: if you must cut the trip short
  • Flight Delay: meals and accommodation for significant delays
  • Baggage Loss: reimbursement for lost or stolen luggage
  • Passport Loss: replacement costs abroad
  • Personal Liability: if you accidentally cause damage or injury
  • Personal Accident: accidental death and dismemberment benefit

Non-medical coverage is often available as an optional add-on or bundled with medical plans.

The Provincial Coverage Gap

Your Provincial Health Plan Has Limits Outside Canada

Many Canadians assume their provincial health card works abroad. In Ontario, OHIP covers absolutely nothing outside Canada since January 1, 2020, when the Out-of-Country Travellers Program was eliminated.

What provincial plans typically cover outside Canada

  • OHIP (Ontario): up to ~$400/day for in-patient hospital care. US hospitals often charge $5,000–$30,000/day
  • Most provinces reimburse at the home province rate, not the destination country rate
  • Air ambulance, evacuation, and repatriation are typically not covered at all
  • Provincial coverage often ends the moment you leave the country

Provincial out-of-country coverage rules vary and change over time. Always confirm your province's current policy before travelling.

Important: notify your insurer within 24 hours

If you need emergency treatment while travelling, most travel insurance plans require you to call the 24/7 assistance line as quickly as possible, ideally within 24 hours of receiving care. Late notification can affect how a claim is processed.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption

What Happens If You Cannot Go or Have to Come Home Early?

Trip cancellation coverage protects the money you've already spent on prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if an unexpected event forces you to cancel or cut the trip short.

Common covered cancellation reasons

  • Sudden illness or injury of you or a close family member
  • Death of a covered family member before departure
  • Involuntary job loss after purchasing the policy
  • Natural disaster or severe weather at your destination
  • Government travel advisory issued after booking
  • Mandatory quarantine or illness diagnosed before departure

Covered reasons vary by insurer and policy. Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrades are available on select plans.

Trip Interruption: If the Trip Is Already Underway

  • Emergency return airfare if you must fly home early
  • Unused, prepaid, non-refundable accommodation costs
  • Additional accommodation costs if you are stranded
  • Cost of a companion flying out if you are hospitalized
Important: Adventure Activities & High Altitude

Planning an Adventure Trip? Standard Coverage May Not Apply

Standard travel insurance policies commonly exclude high-risk activities, particularly anything above 4,500 metres (approximately 14,800 feet) in altitude, or activities classified as extreme sports.

Mountaineering & High Altitude Trekking
Rock Climbing & Ice Climbing
Skydiving & Paragliding
Bungee Jumping
Competitive Racing
Scuba Diving (beyond recreational limits)
What a standard policy typically covers
Recreational skiing and snowboarding (groomed runs)
Hiking and trekking below 4,500m / 14,800ft
Snorkelling and recreational scuba (certified, shallow)
Cycling on established roads and trails
Non-competitive water sports (kayaking, surfing)
What usually requires a special rider or policy
Mountaineering above 4,500m
Heli-skiing or off-piste skiing in unpatrolled areas
Skydiving, BASE jumping, paragliding
Any competitive sports or organized racing events

EGE Insurance can identify plans with adventure sports riders that extend coverage to high-risk activities.

Choose Your Plan Type

Single Trip vs. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

The right plan type depends on how often you travel and how long each trip typically lasts.

Single Trip Insurance

Covers one specific trip with a defined start and end date. Ideal for longer trips that may exceed the annual plan's maximum trip length, or for travellers who only take one or two trips per year.

  • Covers trips of any length, including extended stays
  • Ideal for one long trip (e.g., 90–180 day snowbirds to Florida)
  • Best value for travellers who take 1 trip per year
  • Can include trip cancellation and non-medical add-ons

Not sure which plan fits your travel pattern? Our advisors will compare both options for your specific situation. Monthly payment options are available on select plans.

6 Factors That Affect Your Premium

1
Age: the single biggest cost driver. Premiums increase significantly after age 60.
2
Pre-existing conditions: stable conditions may be covered but increase your premium.
3
Destination: the USA is the most expensive due to high medical costs.
4
Trip length: longer trips cost more. Annual plans are more cost-effective for 2+ trips/year.
5
Coverage amount: $10M costs slightly more than $2M but provides far more protection.
6
Deductible: a $500–$1,000 deductible can reduce your premium by 15–30%.
💡 Save Money Tip

Choose a Higher Deductible

A $1,000 deductible on a single-trip plan can reduce your cost by 20–30% vs. a $0 deductible plan. EGE Insurance shows you both options side-by-side so you can decide what fits your budget.

Got Questions?

Travel Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

Does my provincial health plan cover me outside Canada?
Provincial coverage outside Canada is very limited. As of January 1, 2020, OHIP no longer covers any out-of-country medical expenses. Ontario eliminated its Out-of-Country Travellers Program entirely. Air ambulance and evacuation costs are typically not covered at all. Travel insurance protects you from these large out-of-pocket bills.
What's the difference between single trip and annual travel insurance?
A single-trip plan covers one trip with set departure and return dates. An annual plan covers an unlimited number of trips within a 12-month period, up to a maximum trip length per departure. If you travel more than twice a year, an annual plan is usually more cost-effective and more convenient.
Are pre-existing conditions covered by travel insurance?
Many policies cover stable pre-existing conditions if they meet a stability requirement, meaning no changes in medication, symptoms, or treatment within a defined stability period before departure. Stability periods typically range from 90 to 365 days depending on the insurer. For example, GMS requires 90 days, while Manulife, Allianz, TuGo, and Blue Cross require 180 days. EGE Insurance will review your health history and identify which plans are most likely to cover your specific conditions.

Trip Coverage, Cancellation & More Questions

Does travel insurance cover trip cancellation?
Many plans offer trip cancellation and interruption coverage as an optional add-on or included benefit. Covered reasons typically include sudden illness or injury, death of a family member, job loss, natural disasters, and certain government travel advisories.
Does travel insurance cover adventure sports and high-altitude activities?
Standard policies often exclude high-risk activities such as mountaineering above 4,500m, skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and competitive racing. Specialized adventure sports riders are available from select insurers. Always disclose your planned activities when applying.
What should I do if I need medical treatment while travelling?
Call your insurer's 24/7 emergency assistance line as soon as possible. Many plans require notification within 24 hours. Failing to call ahead can affect how a claim is handled. EGE Insurance walks you through the emergency contact process before you leave.
Is travel insurance required for a visa application?
Some countries, particularly Schengen Area destinations in Europe, require proof of travel insurance as part of the visa application. Coverage must typically meet minimum amounts (often €30,000 or equivalent). EGE Insurance can provide the right documentation and coverage letter.
How much does travel insurance cost in Canada?
The cost depends on your age, destination, trip length, coverage amount, deductible, and any add-ons. Comparing plans from multiple insurers is the best way to find competitive pricing. Use our instant quote tool above or call 416-477-1516 to speak with an advisor.
